Legislative Updates:
House Bill 1029 - Law Enforcement

on this bill.
Citations Affected: IC 5-2-1-9; IC 36-8-3-20.
Synopsis: Reserve police officer training. Requires after June 30, 2009, a
police reserve officer to successfully complete the basic training required
for other law enforcement officers in order to exercise police powers.
Prohibits a police reserve officer appointed before July 1, 1993, or a
police reserve officer who completed a pre-basic training course before
July 1, 2008, from exercising police powers after June 30, 2009, unless the
officer successfully completes the basic training requirements.
Effective: July 1, 2008.

Explanation of Local Expenditures: Board-certified training centers, such
as the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department facility, may require
additional expenditures to train reserve police officers. Any additional
training would have to be carried out within existing resources. The
specific impact to local expenditures would depend on the facility and the
number of reserve officers that are trained. Additionally, the bill could
reduce the number of full-time police officer candidates sponsored for
basic training at the LETA by their local law enforcement agency if greater
numbers of reserve officers are sponsored.
